Research Engineer

Position Overview

A concrete Research Engineer with experience in testing cementitious materials to various standards per AASHTO, ASTM, ACI, and other governing bodies. The ideal candidate has a minimum of 5 years, preferably more, hands-on experience in cement and concrete testing in a ready mixed concrete plant, materials testing laboratory, or industrial setting as well as familiarity with precast concrete production.

The Research Engineer is responsible for executing research on various cementitious materials to ensure their usage in concrete conform to ASTM and AASHTO standards. Assessment of concrete and material properties using relevant ASTM and AASHTO standards, as well as proportioning, mixing, forming, and curing these materials for performance testing are a major component of the position.

General Duties:

  • Ensure a safe work environment by following CARBON LIMIT’s health and safety guidelines and policies.
  • Execute testing activity planned by the team by conducting various cement, mortar tests including preparation of test materials, preparation of mortar specimens, and operation and interpretation of various test equipment.
  • Execution of testing tasks according to standard operating procedures or testing standards.
  • Work with a team to ensure timely testing and communication of results.
  • Visit customer sites for collecting information on concrete mix designs and mixing procedures.
  • Maintain laboratory and test facilities. 
  • Maintain and record data and notes as required.
  • Be organized and able to work to deadlines.

Education and Experience:

  • M.S. in Civil Engineering with special focus on cementitious materials.
  • Experience of working within the construction industry for department of transportation (DoT) projects would be advantageous.
  • Experience of working within an accredited laboratory would be advantageous.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in mixture proportioning, mixing, curing, and testing of concrete materials as per ASTM and ASSHTO standards.
  • Experience on life cycle assessment (LCA) of concrete and sustainability.

Certifications:

  • Professional certifications (Such as ACI) preferred
  • Working knowledge of ASTM test methods (such as C39, C109, C114, C204, C642, C666, C1012, C1202, C1437, C1872, C1905, C1910) preferred.
